Path & wall cleaning in Blackburn, Darwen and across Lancashire
Paths and steps are where people actually slip, and they are usually the last thing anyone thinks to clean.
A green path is the most common accident waiting to happen around a house, particularly the shaded strip down the side that never sees sun. Steps are worse again, because a slip on a step is a fall rather than a stumble. Both clean up quickly and cheaply compared with what they cost to ignore.
Garden and boundary walls go the same way, especially north-facing stone and rendered blockwork that stays damp. Brick and stone walls take pressure well. Rendered walls do not, and if the wall is rendered it wants a different approach entirely rather than a lance.
Timber decking is included here too, and it is the one that needs the lightest touch of the lot. Too much pressure, or the wrong angle, tears out the soft grain between the harder rings and leaves the boards furred and splintery. It looks clean on the day and feels awful a week later. Low pressure along the grain takes longer and keeps the boards intact.
How the job runs
What actually happens on the day.
- 01
Check the surface
Brick, stone, concrete, render or timber all behave differently under a lance. Establishing which is which is what stops damage.
- 02
Treat the growth
Algae and moss killed off first so far less pressure is needed, which matters most on timber and older stone.
- 03
Wash to suit
Full pressure on hard brick and concrete, eased right back on decking and soft stone, always working along the grain on timber.
- 04
Rinse and make safe
Everything rinsed down so there is no slippery residue left behind, and any loose or rotten boards flagged up to you.

Straight answers
Path & wall cleaning, answered.
Will jet washing ruin my decking?
It will if the pressure is too high or the angle is wrong, because the water tears out the soft grain and leaves the boards furry and splintery. Done at low pressure along the grain it is completely fine, it just takes longer.
Can you clean a rendered wall?
Not with a pressure washer, and that is worth being firm about. High pressure goes straight through modern silicone render and the repair is re-rendering a whole elevation. Brick and stone walls are no problem at all.
Can you do the alley behind the house?
Yes, back yards, ginnels and shared alleys are common jobs around the terraced streets in Darwen and Blackburn. Worth asking the neighbours if they want theirs doing at the same time, because it works out cheaper for everyone.
