Stone & brickwork cleaning in Blackburn, Darwen and across Lancashire

Old stone comes up better than most people expect, as long as it is not attacked.

A lot of the stone round here is blackened from a century of soot rather than dirt sitting on the surface. It comes off, but it comes off gradually and at a pressure the stone can take. Blasting it is quicker and it is also how you lose the face of the stone and blow the pointing out at the same time.

Brick and render are their own thing again. Render holds algae in the texture, so it goes green on the shaded side of a house years before the sunny side. Brick is usually more about what has run down it, gutter overflow, moss stains, and the marks left where a downpipe has been leaking quietly.

This is another one that gets looked at before it gets priced. The right approach depends on what the wall is made of and what state the pointing is in, and both of those are things to check rather than assume.

How the job runs

What actually happens on the day.

  1. 01

    Look at the wall first

What the wall is made of and the state of the pointing decide the method. Old lime pointing and modern cement behave completely differently.

  2. 02

    Test a small patch

A small area gets done first so you can see the result and agree it before the whole wall is committed to.

  3. 03

    Cleaned at the right pressure

Matched to the material rather than turned up to the maximum. Slower on old stone is the difference between clean and damaged.

  4. 04

    Rinsed down and checked

Everything washed down afterwards, including the paths and windows below that catch the run-off.

Straight answers

Stone & brickwork cleaning, answered.

Will cleaning damage old stone or the pointing?

It can if it is done at the wrong pressure, which is why the wall gets looked at first and a small patch gets tested. Old lime pointing in particular will not take what modern cement will. If a wall is not safe to clean you will be told.

Can you get soot off old stone?

Usually a good deal of it. A century of soot has often worked into the surface rather than sitting on it, so the honest answer is it will come up a lot lighter rather than back to new. You will see the difference on a test patch before committing.

How much is it?

Priced per job after a look, because the material and the condition change the work more than the square metres do. Send a photo for a free quote.
